Moscow. The capital of one of the biggest world countries. Moscow conglomerate consists of not only the Red Square, Kremlin, modern skyscrapers, it consists as well of hundreds of side streets, lanes, underground tunnels, sewage and thermal pipes. And in this city maze, there rae 300 000 homeless children, left to their own devices, they have been suffering from hunger, various diseases and adults – their prosecutors. Hania Polak is one of the fee people who care about the fate of those children. Since 1995 – when she first encountered that problem, Hania has been organizing help for those children of the streets. She gathers food and clothes for them, provides them not only with everyday care, but also with medical and psychological help. Her activity helps those children to retain hope for a better future. In 2004 on the initiative of Hania Polak and the “Aktywna Pomoc Dzieciom” (Active Help for Children) foundation, a film “Children from Leningrad Station” describing life of Moscow children of the streets was shot. Nominated for Oscar, this moving documentary managed to attract the international public attention to the scope of the problem and to the solitarily struggle of Hania Polak.
